Line Feed Delay and X Scanning Buffer Parameter Issue on Bolt Series

Question

For some reason, at the end of each line, the laser head seems to make a brief hard stop before starting the next line.

I started the engraving from the center of the work bed, where there should be sufficient space for the engraving, but the machine still displays a “Buffer Distance Insufficient” alarm on the control panel.

Answer

This issue may be related to the Line Feed Delay and X Scanning Buffer parameters.

These parameters can currently be checked and adjusted in RDWorks or LaserMaker. As of September 2026, these parameters are not available for adjustment in LightBurn.

Line Feed Delay

Cause

The September 2025 Bolt controller firmware did not correctly initialize the default values for two newly activated user parameters:

  • Line Feed Delay: Normally set to 0

  • X Scanning Buffer: Normally set to 10

Certain operations may cause these parameters to be changed to abnormal values. So far, we have confirmed that the following operations may trigger this issue:

  1. Clicking Factory Backup

  2. Toggling the speed mode from the touch panel

When these parameters have abnormal values, they may cause unexpected engraving behavior.

For example:

  • An abnormally high Line Feed Delay value can cause the laser head to pause at the end of each engraving line. The larger the value, the longer the pause.

  • An abnormally high X Scanning Buffer value can result in an excessively large required buffer distance. For example, a value may result in a required buffer distance of 508 mm, preventing the machine from operating normally.

Modify in RDWorks

Line Feed Delay

0

Greater than 0

The laser head pauses at the end of each line. A larger value results in a longer pause.

X Scanning Buffer

10 as a starting value

Greater than 50

Excessively large buffer distance requirements may prevent normal operation.

Temporary Solution

If you encounter these issues, check and adjust the two parameters in RDWorks or LaserMaker.

1. Line Feed Delay

Set Line Feed Delay to 0.

This parameter currently has no practical function. It was originally enabled to test whether it could help alleviate a banding issue. Testing showed that it was not effective, so the function was not adopted.

2. X Scanning Buffer

Set X Scanning Buffer to 10 as a starting value.

Depending on the engraving result and machine configuration, this value may be adjusted if necessary. For more information about X Scanning Buffer adjustment, please refer to:

Engraving Offset and Ghosting Troubleshooting Guide

After changing the parameters, run the same file again and check whether the hard-stop effect at the end of each line and abnormal buffer distance requirement have been resolved.

Permanent Solution

A new version of the Bolt controller firmware is being developed to address this issue.

The new firmware will include the correct default values for these parameters and will prevent certain operations from changing them to excessively large or otherwise abnormal values.

The new firmware is currently undergoing testing and validation. It has not yet been released for general use.

This article will be updated when the new firmware has completed validation and is ready for release.
